TSG Hoffenheim have completed the signing of highly-rated Norwegian striker Martine Fenger from FC Barcelona, adding one of Scandinavia’s most promising young attacking talents to their squad ahead of the new season.
The 19-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Frauen-Bundesliga side that will keep her at the club until June 2028, bringing an end to a three-year spell with Barcelona.
The transfer represents an important next step in Fenger’s development as she seeks regular first-team football after progressing through one of the strongest women’s football environments in Europe.
Barcelona Talent Heads to Germany
Fenger joined Barcelona in 2023 and spent the majority of her time developing with Barcelona B, where she established herself as a prolific goalscorer. Across 42 appearances in Spain’s second tier, she scored 13 goals and continued to build her reputation as one of Norway’s brightest attacking prospects.
The Norwegian forward also gained valuable experience with Barcelona’s senior side, making 57 competitive appearances between 2023 and 2026. Twelve of those came in Liga F, where she found the net three times.
Although first-team opportunities were limited due to Barcelona’s world-class attacking depth, Fenger remained close to the elite level throughout her stay in Catalonia. She was included in nine UEFA Women’s Champions League matchday squads and made her European debut during Barcelona’s 3-1 victory over Benfica in the league phase of the competition.
Leaving Barcelona is never an insignificant story in women’s football, and Fenger’s departure highlights both the extraordinary competition for places at the Spanish giants and the growing appeal of the Frauen-Bundesliga as a destination for emerging talent.
Who Is Martine Fenger?
Born in Kristiansand, Norway, Fenger emerged as a standout talent at an early age. She made her Toppserien debut for Kolbotn IL at just 15 years old during the 2022 season, demonstrating maturity beyond her years. Following Kolbotn’s relegation, she enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2023, scoring 10 goals in 12 league matches as the club pushed for promotion.
Her performances quickly attracted international attention and ultimately earned her move to Barcelona.
Fenger has also been a consistent presence within Norway’s youth national team system. Since first representing her country at Under-16 level, she has accumulated 35 appearances and scored 10 goals across various youth age groups.
Her rapid development was further recognised this season when she received her first call-up to Norway’s Under-23 squad, making three appearances.
Still only 19, Fenger combines high-level experience with significant room for growth, making her one of the most intriguing young forwards to watch in European football.
What Martine Fenger Will Bring to Hoffenheim
Hoffenheim believe they have secured a forward perfectly suited to their style of play. Head coach Eva Virsinger described Fenger as a natural goalscorer capable of creating danger both with her back to goal and through runs in behind opposition defences. That versatility should give Hoffenheim additional attacking flexibility in the Bundesliga.
Fenger’s profile aligns well with the demands of German football. Strong, direct and intelligent in her movement, she possesses the physical and tactical qualities needed to thrive in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.
Beyond her goalscoring ability, she arrives with experience gained from training and competing within Barcelona’s elite environment. Despite her young age, she understands the standards required at the highest level and brings a winning mentality shaped by her involvement with a Champions League-winning squad.
For Hoffenheim, this signing represents more than a move for the future. Fenger has the potential to contribute immediately while developing into a key figure in the club’s long-term project.
Fenger Confident Hoffenheim Is the Right Move
Martine Fenger said her decision to join Hoffenheim was made easier by the positive impression the club made during the transfer process. The Norwegian striker felt an immediate connection with the Bundesliga side and believes the move offers the ideal environment to continue her development after three years at Barcelona.
“When I visited TSG for the first time, I immediately felt very welcome. From the very beginning, I had a really good feeling about the club and the people around the team.”
The 19-year-old also pointed to Hoffenheim’s playing style as a key factor in her decision, explaining that she sees a strong fit between the club’s footballing philosophy and her own strengths as an attacker.
“I really like the way the team wants to play football. The style of play is very attractive and I think it suits my qualities as a striker. I can see myself fitting into this team and contributing to the way Hoffenheim want to play.”
Having already experienced elite-level football in Spain, including involvement with Barcelona’s UEFA Women’s Champions League-winning squad, Fenger believes a move to Germany will help her take the next step in her career.
“I also think the German league fits me and my style of play. That’s why moving to Hoffenheim is the right step for me to continue developing and improving as a player. I want to challenge myself, learn as much as possible and become the best version of myself.”
The transfer gives Fenger the opportunity to earn more regular first-team minutes while continuing her growth in one of Europe’s strongest leagues. Hoffenheim will hope the talented Norwegian can translate the potential she showed in Norway and at Barcelona into a breakthrough spell in the Frauen-Bundesliga.
