Every season, fans point to a team and say, “This team is destined to win it all.” Yet every championship journey contains obstacles, setbacks, and moments that could have changed everything. Only one team can truly claim the title of “team of destiny.”
Every NBA franchise begins the season with the same destination: reach the playoffs and compete for a championship. Most never get there. But destination and destiny are not the same thing. A destination is a goal. Destiny is something greater. Only a select few teams each year appear to have it on their side.
This season, that team is the New York Knicks.

Their last trip to the NBA Finals came 27 years ago against the San Antonio Spurs. That Spurs team launched a dynasty, while the Knicks spent the next two decades falling short of a return to the league’s biggest stage.
Until now.
This year, the Knicks are not only reaching their destination—they are realizing their destiny.
New York trailed by 29 points in Game 4 against San Antonio. What once looked like a commanding 2-0 series lead suddenly appeared headed toward a 2-2 tie as the series prepared to shift back to San Antonio. But the Knicks have built their postseason run on overcoming impossible odds.
Earlier in the Finals, they erased another large deficit against the Spurs. They also rallied from 22 points down against the Cleveland Cavaliers during their playoff run. Faced with another seemingly insurmountable challenge, the Knicks once again found a way.

Then came the moment that defined the Knicks NBA Finals destiny.

Jalen Brunson’s potential game-winning three-pointer fell short. The ball bounced off the rim and seemed to hang in the air forever. Two Spurs defenders were perfectly positioned to secure the rebound and end the game.
Instead, OG Anunoby arrived at exactly the right moment.
His sprint toward the basket immediately after the inbound pass proved decisive. Anunoby tipped the ball back into the hoop, giving New York the lead with just 1.2 seconds remaining.
The Spurs still had one final chance, but they could not execute the one-second drill on the ensuing inbound. In an instant, the Knicks transformed what looked like a devastating road trip into a commanding series advantage. Rather than returning home tied 2-2, they moved within one victory of their first NBA championship in 53 years.
History is within reach.
