ESPN’s Adam Schefter details Broncos’ vision under Sean Payton after new contract

The Denver Broncos have made another major commitment to stability. They have agreed to a new five-year NFL contract with head coach Sean Payton, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The extension replaces the final two years remaining on Payton’s previous deal and keeps him under contract through the 2030 season. The move comes after Denver’s rapid rise under the veteran coach, culminating in a 14-3 campaign and an appearance in the AFC Championship Game last season.

Schefter provided additional details during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.

“He had two years left on his contract. Two years are now gone. In its place is a new five-year deal,” Schefter said.

“That’s usually not what teams do, but the Broncos have aggressive ownership.”

The decision reflects Denver’s belief that Payton remains the right architect for a franchise that has steadily improved since acquiring him from the New Orleans Saints in 2023 for a first-round and second-round pick.

Schefter noted that the extension also aligns Payton’s future with general manager George Paton, who recently received a five-year contract of his own.

“Now you align George Paton with Sean Payton for the next five years,” Schefter explained.

“They were in the AFC Championship Game, they have their quarterback of the future, and Greg and Carrie Penner are building this thing for the long term.”

The numbers support that approach. Denver improved from eight wins in 2023 to 10 wins in 2024 before exploding for 14 victories in 2025. More importantly, the Broncos finally appear to have solved their long-term quarterback question with BoNix.

Broncos opting for Continuity

This extension is less about rewarding past success and more about protecting continuity. Denver spent years cycling through coaches, quarterbacks, and front-office philosophies after its Super Bowl 50 victory. The organization now has alignment between ownership, the general manager and the head coach.

Schefter also pointed to Payton’s commitment level at this stage of his career, saying, “I think Sean Payton’s 62. How many men at 62 are enthusiastically signing up for five more years of work?”

The Broncos enter 2026 with heightened expectations after adding talent around Nix and reaching the doorstep of the Super Bowl. By securing both Payton and Paton through 2030, Denver is making it clear that the current leadership group will have every opportunity to finish what it has started.
