Sean Payton: Broncos extension ‘makes all the sense in the world’

Sean Payton is sticking around for a while.

The Broncos head coach met with reporters Thursday at OTAs, hours after Denver announced a new five-year contract that ties him to the franchise through the 2030 season.

“Look, I think it makes all the sense in the world,” Payton said. “I’m super appreciative of that opportunity.”

Payton’s previous deal had two years remaining. The new contract replaces it and gives Denver long-term stability with Payton, general manager George Paton and quarterback Bo Nix all aligned as the Broncos try to build on an AFC Championship Game appearance last season.

Payton said the deal came together after Paton received his own extension earlier this offseason.

“I think it began after that, and then it got finished,” Payton said. “Timing-wise, that’s exactly how it happened.”

The Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group has now secured both key football decision-makers for the long term. Payton said that alignment was a major reason he wanted to remain in Denver.

“That triangle of ownership, the Walton-Penner Group, Greg and then George, working with him,” Payton said. “I’ve been spoiled because I had a real good experience in New Orleans with ownership and Mickey (Loomis,) and to go two for two with that is hard in our league. I’m thankful they want me back, and we’ll do everything we can to continue to keep winning.”

The Broncos hired Payton before the 2023 season to fix a franchise that had not made the playoffs since winning Super Bowl 50.

His first year was a step forward but more of a reset than anything. Denver went 8-9, moved on from Russell Wilson and absorbed one of the largest dead-cap hits in NFL history.

Then came Nix.

The Broncos drafted the quarterback in 2024, made the playoffs that season and continued their climb in 2025, going 14-3 and reaching the AFC Championship Game before falling to New England with the quarterback hurt.

Now the franchise has the kind of stability it once almost always had but chased for much of the last decade.

“Sean Payton has led an impressive turnaround over the past three seasons, instilling a winning culture with high expectations,” Broncos CEO and owner Greg Penner said in a statement. “I appreciate the close partnership he shares with George Paton along with the alignment and stability across our football operations.”

Payton, 62, was asked Thursday whether a five-year deal made him think about how much longer he wants to coach.

“I haven’t given any thought to the end game,” Payton said. “I think I’ve got a lot of juice left, and I enjoy what we’re doing. Someone asked the other day, ‘Do you enjoy it?’ And I think when that stops is when you’ve got to look at it, but I’m not at that spot right now.”

Payton said he knew Denver was the right fit even with Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid and the Chiefs sitting in the AFC West.

“It wasn’t like we were trying to find a division with Andy and Patrick in it,” Payton said. “But it was the right job with the ownership group, with George, that interview process. My gut told me that, and I think fortunately for me they felt the same way.”

Payton won a Super Bowl with the Saints after the 2009 season. No head coach has won Super Bowls with two different franchises.

That remains the chase in Denver.
