Robert Lewandowski attracting Premier League interest following Barcelona exit

Barcelona are in the process of trying to sign a new striker, with Julian Alvarez being their leading target. One is needed due to the departure of Robert Lewandowski, who will officially depart when his contract expires at the end of this month after opting against signing a new deal at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Lewandowski was told that he would play a secondary role if he remained in Hansi Flick’s squad, while a significant wage reduction was also being asked of him. Taking everything into account, he decided that a new challenge was in his best interest, and that was alerted many clubs across the world.

Those in Italy, Saudi Arabia and the United States have already make moves towards signing Lewandowski, who is still evaluating his options. One more could be set to come to the table, with the BBC (via MD) reporting that Manchester United are considering a move for the veteran Polish number nine.

Infamously, Lewandowski almost moved to the Premier League prior to joining Borussia Dortmund when Blackburn Rovers came in for him. A deal was agreed with then-club Lech Poznan, but due to a volcanic eruption in Iceland, it fell through and he ended up in Germany – but 16 years on, he could finally make the move to England.

If it transpires that Lewandowski does end up signing for Man United, it could be that he ends up facing off against Barcelona next season. Both clubs will be in the draw for the league phase of the Champions League, meaning there is a possibility that they rekindle the rivalry that was established after meeting in the 2009 and 2011 finals, both of which were won by the Catalans.

It remains to be seen where Lewandowski ends up, but Man United could turn out to be a very good option for him.
