Barcelona’s strategy in the goalscoring department has kept shifting so far this summer. From eyeing a move for Julian Alvarez as a direct replacement for Robert Lewandowski, the club appear to be recalibrating a few things.
One of those changes could see Ferran Torres getting a renewed importance in the team, even though the former Manchester City starlet was linked with a move away from Camp Nou not too long ago.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have made a decision to accelerate contract talks with Torres, abandoning their original plan of waiting until September or October to address his situation.
The club had initially intended to follow the same approach they took with Frenkie de Jong, who entered the final year of his contract without Barcelona panicking, eventually signing a new deal in October 2025. That strategy has now been dropped.
Torres currently has one year remaining on his contract, which expires in June 2027.
The extension being considered would run for three or four additional seasons, though the precise terms will depend on negotiations with the player’s agent, Hector Peris.
Why the decision makes sense now
Lewandowski’s departure has fundamentally changed the calculus around Torres. The Valencian has already made the full transition from right winger to centre-forward under Hansi Flick, and his numbers back up that conversion entirely.

Across 49 matches in all competitions last season, he scored 21 goals and registered three assists in 2,692 minutes of play.
Another factor that has played a key role in Barcelona’s renewed faith is the decision not to activate the purchase option for Marcus Rashford.
The most obvious reason, of course, is that Barcelona have not made any headway in their pursuit of Julian Alvarez, the club’s top choice to replace Lewandowski.
Atletico Madrid have remained steadfast in their will not to sell the Argentine, pointing to his release clause worth around €500 million.
Barcelona are not willing to commit anywhere over the €120 million mark. Hence, the renewal of Ferran would make sense, given that Alvarez is not coming anytime soon while Rashford will return to Manchester United.
