Chelsea are closing in on the signing of highly-rated Wigan Athletic youngster Harrison Bettoni after reportedly winning the race for one of England’s most sought-after teenage prospects this summer, according to Pete O’Rourke.
The 18-year-old attacking midfielder has emerged as a major target for several elite European clubs following an impressive breakthrough campaign with Wigan in League One.
Reports earlier this month suggested that CHELSEA, Manchester City and AC Milan were all in discussions over a potential move for the teenager, whose contract situation made him an attractive market opportunity.
Bettoni enjoyed a standout season at Wigan, making 27 senior appearances and scoring four goals across all competitions. The Stockport-born youngster announced himself in spectacular fashion after scoring twice on his League One debut against AFC Wimbledon, including a free-kick with his first touch of the game. His performances quickly attracted attention from scouts across Europe.
Chelsea’s recruitment strategy under their current ownership has focused heavily on securing emerging young talent from around the world, and Bettoni appears to fit that profile perfectly.
The Blues have invested significantly in youth prospects over recent transfer windows, viewing them as long-term assets capable of developing into first-team players.
While no official announcement has yet been made, multiple reports claim Chelsea have moved ahead of rival suitors and are now expected to complete a deal for the midfielder.
Social media reports and transfer insiders have suggested the player is set to join the Stamford Bridge club on a free transfer, with Wigan entitled to receive training compensation due to his age.
Manchester City and AC Milan were both believed to be monitoring the situation closely and had held talks regarding a potential move. However, CHELSEA‘s development pathway and recent success in attracting elite young prospects are thought to have played a significant role in convincing Bettoni of his next destination.
Should the transfer be finalised, Bettoni is expected to begin his Chelsea career within the club’s academy and development structure before potentially progressing toward first-team involvement.
The move would represent another statement of intent from Chelsea as they continue to build for the future by targeting some of the brightest young talents in English football
