Everton look set for glamour friendly this summer
Everton could be set for a summer clash with HSV Hamburg, after Toffees delegates visited the German club earlier this year.
BILD report that Everton could be in line to be the glamour opponent for HSV’s “Volkspark Festival” this summer.
Everton delegation make trip
The newspaper explains that the German side are finalising plans for their annual pre-season friendly. It is usually their last before the Bundesliga season begins.
Every year HSV treat the game as their season opener, inviting a prominent opponent to Hamburg before the Bundesliga kicks off between August 28th and 30th. Last year it was Lyon, who ‘thrashed’ HSV 4-0.
This year the game is pencilled in for August 1st, and the signs are ‘increasingly pointing’ to Everton being the opponents at the Volksparkstadion.
While the contracts not yet finalised between the two clubs, a delegation from Everton visited Hamburg in the Spring. According to BILD this delegation toured the stadium. They also held initial talks with HSV’s management about a friendly match.
Should the two finalise the game, it will be the first time they have ever met in any capacity. That in itself is interesting given Everton were founded in 1878, a year after HSV’s founding in 1887.
Everton’s pre-season plans
Everton are yet to announce any pre-season friendlies except a clash with Newcastle United in Edinburgh on August 12th. The Premier League is set to begin the following weekend on August 22nd.
This year David Moyes side have elected not to be a part of any major events after taking part in the Premier League’s summer series in America last year.
That proved to be something of a hindrance to David Moyes. He headed to the States with a depleted squad that eventually drew with Manchester United but lost to both West Ham and Bournemouth.
This year they are doing things differently. That appears to include being the star guests for HSV’s preparations before they kick off their Bundesliga campaign.
