Manchester United have been handed an important boost in their quest to offload unwanted goalkeeper Andre Onana.
The 30-year-old has been on MUFC’s books since making the £47.5 million move from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023. Erik ten Hag considered his old Ajax pupil the ideal heir for club legend David De Gea, but he endured two woeful campaigns at Old Trafford.
Onana was guilty of committing shocking blunders on a recurring basis. Former Italian goalkeeper Alberto Fontana also chastised him for his flamboyant style, which makes him ‘unpopular’ among his teammates.
Trabzonspor keen to keep Andre Onana
Following the arrival of Senne Lammens, Onana was omitted from Ruben Amorim’s plans last summer. He ended up joining Trabzonspor on a season-long loan.
The Cameroonian had a decent campaign in Turkiye, cementing himself as an important player at the club.
Onana’s Career Stats Appearances Goals Conceded Clean Sheets
Ajax 214 192 83
Inter Milan 41 36 19
Man Utd 102 150 24
Trabzonspor 33 40 6
Therefore, Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan reveals his desire to keep the former Ajax and Inter custodian at the club.
The club chief reveals that the Turkish side is willing to meet Onana’s salary demands, so he expects him to stay beyond the summer.
“I think Andre Onana will stay in the team. Because we gave the number he wanted in financial matters,” he told Ajansspor.
“The fans love him too. A quality person. I don’t think we’ll have a problem.”
Trabzonspor president Ertuğrul Doğan said that they are ready to offer Andre Onana the money he wants and believes he is likely to stay with the club:

It remains to be seen if the two clubs will be able to find an agreement on the transfer fee. The goalkeeper still has another two years left on his contract, so his book value is expected to be just below £20 million.
Following Man Utd’s return to the Champions League, Onana’s salary could reach circa £150k per week.
What’s next for Man United’s goalkeeping department
Thanks to an exceptional first campaign at Old Trafford, Lammens has consolidated himself as the club’s long-term No.1. The club has also offered Tom Heaton a new one-year deal, so the veteran will continue to serve as a third-choice goalkeeper.
Nevertheless, the identity of Man Utd’s back-up shot-stopper remains shrouded in mystery, with Altay Bayindir heavily linked with a return to Turkiye, particularly to Besiktas.
22-year-old Radek Vitek enjoyed an impressive loan stint at Bristol City, but will not settle for an understudy role.
Therefore, United will likely have to sign a new goalkeeper. Premier League veteran Karl Darlow and Sam Johnston have emerged as potential candidates. The first is now a free agent after seeing out his contract with Leeds United, while the second could be available following Wolves’ relegation to the Championship.
