Broncos edge rusher Jonathon Cooper now faces more charges in connection with a June 4 incident at his home that resulted in his arrest.
Per Douglas County court records, the sixth-year veteran now faces charges of second-degree assault by strangulation and third-degree assault, knowing or recklessly causing bodily injury. The second-degree charge is a felony; the third-degree one is a misdemeanor.
Cooper already entered a not-guilty plea to a charge of criminal mischief earlier this week.

BRONCOS COACH SEAN PAYTON ADDRESSED THE SITUATION THURSDAY
Head coach Sean Payton said after Thursday’s OTA that he had not directly addressed Cooper’s legal entanglements with the team at large.
“I haven’t. My instincts told me not to right away,” Payton said. “This time next week, we have three days of minicamp. We’ll have a number of speakers. I think there will be a time, though, to talk about it.”
Legal issues have become relatively rare for the team in recent years, especially since Payton assumed the reins in 2023.
“When it’s the offseason or it’s the weekend, no news is always good news. Knock on wood, we’ve had a long stretch where that’s been the case,” he said Thursday.
“Now we’ll stay as informed as possible. We”ll follow the league’s guidelines, and I’m sure a lot of that will be led by the local authorities’ guidelines. We’ll pay attention to all of it.”
