Albion and Barcelona linked to World Cup defender at Spurs

The Seagulls are said to have bid £30 million for young Spurs centre-back Luka Vuskovic, who spent last season on loan at Hamburger SV.

But they are likely to face high-level competition for his services.

Revealing the bid via The Athletic, David Ornstein said there is strong interest from leading clubs in Europe but that Vuskovic sees Albion as a good next step in his development.

An Argus contact in Hamburg says Vuskovic is also subject of talks with Barcelona, with whom his agent Pini Zahavi has been in contact, and other top-tier European outfits.

The expectation from those who have followed him closely in the Bundesliga would be that he would command a fee in excess of £30 million and looks a Champions League player.

But Albion will be encouraged by the fact they can offer Premier League football and a proven career pathway.

Vuskovic, 19, could be in the middle of defence for Croatia when they play England in Dallas on Wednesday.

And that underlines the impact he has made on his national team set-up.

Head coach Zlatko Dalic changed his customary four-man defence to a three plus wing-backs in the final qualifier and the March friendlies purely to accommodate Vuskovic in his XI.

Vuskovic was outstanding for Hamburg last season and recovered from a knee injury suffered late in the campaign.

He was in the middle of a back three when Croatia played Belgium ahead of the World Cup.

Vuskovic came through the youth set-up at Hajduk Split and has yet to make a senior appearance for Spurs.

He impressed hugely in the air with Hamburg and also has impressive technique on the ground.

A comparative lack of pace means he is best used in a back three.

Albion have so far lost Adam Webster from their defensive options with Jan Paul van Hecke expected to move on.

Van Hecke has already been subject of two unsuccessful bids from Spurs.
