Calijah Kancey sheds a blocking sled and attacks a tackling dummy in the Bucs’ final OTA practice of 2026 Thursday.
Only three more underwear football practices in underwear football season. And that’s if the Bucs don’t cancel any minicamp practices. Bucs minicamp is next week.
So far Kyle Shanahan and yesterday, Sean McVay have already canceled their teams’ minicamps. Will KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles join the new fad?
So yesterday at One Buc Palace it was at times pleasant with a nice breeze and overcast skies. Toward the end of practice the sun came out and reminded us it’s mid-June in Florida. Toasty.
So below are the notes for the final Bucs OTA practice of 2026. And please remember, these are just a handful of plays from practice. No hitting, obviously. And for much of the 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 practice, Joe was heavily screened.
(What is “screened?” Well, most of the time Bucs players and staffers stand between Joe and the actual practice on the field. So, try watching a football game on TV — the local pen and mic club is, at times, kept some 120 yards away from the football, depending on where the ball is — with the palm of your hand against your nose and you’re trying to see the TV screen and follow the game through your fingers, with no audio and no replay. That’s what it is like for Joe to watch Bucs OTA practice. Half the time Joe is watching a specific area right after the play to see if he can catch the number of the quarterback as he walks back and forth between the line and the huddle, or trying to scan between a wall of people to figure out who ended up with the ball as the player is headed back to the huddle or sideline.)
\* There must have been a Bucs alumni function yesterday of some sort. There were several old-time Bucs players from the 70s and 80s there (Joe heard Batman Wood’s name mentioned a few times but didn’t see him). Usually, the Bucs have an alumni day during training camp or sometimes minicamp.
\* One of the alumni was former Bucs corner Aqib Talib. He was allowed on the field and watched a good chunk of practice with Bucs staffers and front office people on the sideline. Most of the alumni watched from the Bucs’ patio that had table umbrellas, so they were able to get some shade.
\* Kenneth Gainwell ran way wide left and it appeared he lost yards. On Thursday, Joe sensed Gainwell was juking a whole lot more than previous practices and often trying to reverse field. Sometimes you are betting off just running straight and not trying to be cute. Too often, dudes who stop and stutterstep do nothing more than give defenders an extra second or two to catch up and make a play. You know, stationary target?
\* Jake Browning tries to throw right and has a pass tipped at the line. Not sure who the intended target was as the ball was so off target.
\* Tez Johnson runs left and he finds a crease and gets a small gain.
\* Browning to Kameron Johnson on the left side for about a 10-yard gain.
\* Browning looks to be throwing to Ko Kieft in the end zone but the two cannot connect.
\* Jaylon Daniels throws a nice screen to the left for a decent gain. Joe couldn’t make out who the receiver was.
\* Dancing Gainwell appears. He takes a handoff and runs left but reverses field back to the right. Then he plants a foot near the right hash and tries to go straight ahead. If he got anything it wasn’t much.
**7-on-7**
\* Baker Mayfield hits Chris Godwin over the middle on a crossing pattern from the left.
\* Mayfield pumps right and hits Godwin over the middle.
\* Browning throws to Bauer Sharp to the left far corner of the end zone for six.
\* Every practice Joe sees, this Bauer makes plays. Yes, Joe knows it is underwear football. Still, last year’s No. 4 tight end Devin Culp is watching from the sidelines (again) on floppy hat patrol while a rookie draft pick at the same position makes plays every practice and now the same rookie is taking snaps with the second team. Joe thinks Culp is on Bubble Watch.
**11-on-11**
\* Mayfield rolls left and then throws back across the middle and hits Godwin. The Bucs veteran receiver is getting a lot of targets today.
\* Mayfield throws high and to the left for Jalen McMillan who skies high and hauls the ball in. Strong catch. But Joe has to admit, seeing McMillan go up high for a pass gives Joe the shivers.
\* Gainwell catches a Mayfield screen pass for the right and Gainwell squirts his way through traffic for a nice gain.
\* Sean Tucker runs to the right but doesn’t get anywhere. There were a pile of defenders after him (gang tackling).
\* Tucker runs up the three hole (between left tackle and guard) for a nice gain.
\* Browning to Kieft to the left.
\* Mayfield to McMillan in the far left corner of the end zone … dropped! McMillan had both hands on the ball. Don’t see that very often.
\* Mayfield rolls to his left and he shot-puts a short pass to Sean Tucker who was on a crossing pattern from his left.
\* Gainwell catches two consecutive passes from Browning. One to the right in the end zone and the second is a short pass over the middle. \`
\* Ted Hurst goes low to scoop up a pass from Browning on the left side near the goal line. Josh Hayes was trying to guard him. Hayes looked like he was going to box out Hurst for a rebound as he stood behind the rookie receiver.
\* Mayfield throws to Tucker to the right side in the end zone and it is six.
\* Mayfield lofts the ball to the far left corner of the end zone and into the waiting hands of Tez Johnson for a score.
And that’s it for Bucs OTAs in 2026. Three minicamp practices are scheduled for next week. After next week, One Buc Palace is shut down until after the Fourth of July.
