Manchester United have reportedly moved ahead of Arsenal in the battle to sign West Ham star Mateus Fernandes. United have been heavily linked with a move to sign the 21-year-old midfielder, with the Gunners also mentioned as a potential destination.
Following West Ham’s relegation to the Championship, reports have speculated that Fernandes is valued at around £80million by the Hammers this summer.
Now there has been a fresh update which will give United encouragement that they could potentially sign Fernandes and add the playmaker to their squad ahead of next season.

The Times have reported that United have now emerged as the favourites to sign Fernandes this summer, and are now ahead of Premier League rivals Arsenal in the race to secure the midfielder’s signature.
The report claims that United have an active interest in trying to sign Fernandes this summer, but are not prepared to meet West Ham’s £80million asking price.
It has also been reported that Real Madrid have joined the race to sign the 21-year-old this summer, with new manager Jose Mourinho said to be keen to add Fernandes to his newly inherited squad.
Following the Hammers’ relegation to the Championship, it has been suggested that the club may be forced into letting Fernandes leave the club this summer.
United are expected to have a busy summer transfer window ahead, with a host of players already being linked with moves to Old Trafford.
The Reds have already agreed a deal to sign midfielder Ederson from Atalanta this summer, with a £35million initial fee combined with £3.8million in add-ons taking the total package for the transfer up to £38.8million.
United are thought to be keen to sign another midfielder, as well as Ederson, following the departure of Casemiro as a free agent.
Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson has been a player of interest to United this summer, but it’s understood that the Reds will pursue other targets with the England international seemingly preferring a switch to Manchester City.
United have also been linked with signing a new left-back this summer following the departure of Tyrell Malacia, with Newcastle defender Lewis Hall’s name being mentioned on the rumour mill.
