Mo Salah‘s departure from Liverpool came due to his treatment by Arne Slot and a return to the club is not ruled out, claims Egypt goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy.

Salah is taking his time to decide his next move after terminating his contract with Liverpool 12 months early.

The 33-year-old ended his legendary nine-year stay at Anfield by forgoing the final season of a contract worth up to £480,000 a week, and is linked with clubs in America, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

But not for the first time, Salah is being touted with a return to Liverpool following the sacking of Slot as head coach.

Speaking to Egyptian broadcaster ON Sport, the forward’s close friend and international team-mate El Shenawy suggested that a renewed deal is not impossible.

“He spent a long time there. He got used to the club, gave them everything, lived many happy moments there, won a lot of trophies,” the Egypt goalkeeper said.

“Naturally, leaving would affect him. That’s normal.

“But who knows? Maybe things could still change and he could stay. Nobody knows.

“He said exactly: ‘Honestly, I still don’t know.’ That’s what he told me. So I really don’t know where he’ll go. He hasn’t made a decision yet.”

‘Slot was the reason Salah left Liverpool’

Few would have anticipated Salah leaving Liverpool so soon after the title-winning campaign that saw him score 34 goals and assist another 23 in 52 games.

But after a difficult start to the 2025/26 season, Salah launched a scathing criticism of the club’s leadership having gone unused for three games in a row.

Perhaps most telling was his criticism of Slot, claiming “all of a sudden we don’t have any relationship,” and El Shenawy has joined Dejan Lovren in pinning the blame for the No. 11’s exit on the head coach.

“That’s why he left. [Slot] was very hard on him,” he continued.

“Salah is on a completely different level. On the contrary, he should have benefited from Salah as much as possible, not treated him the way he did.

“Salah is a legend. He’s made a huge difference for the club and achieved things for them that they had been missing.

“The relationship and the way he was treated, considering he’s a star of Salah’s stature, should have been better than that.

“But [Slot] doesn’t have that culture or mentality because, generally speaking, he’s not a great manager.”
