Former Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit has urged the club to consider a bold summer move for Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, suggesting the French international could be the ideal replacement should Enzo Fernandez depart Stamford Bridge in the coming transfer window.
Fernandez, who joined Chelsea in a British-record transfer from Benfica in 2023, has been the subject of growing speculation in recent weeks, with reports linking him to a potential move to Real Madrid.
Petit believes CHELSEA should be prepared for all scenarios and has pointed to Camavinga as a high-profile option capable of stepping into Fernandez’s role if a sale is sanctioned.
The former France international argued that the midfielder possesses the technical quality, versatility and Champions League experience required to thrive in the Premier League: ‘Eduardo Camavinga in a swap deal with Enzo Fernandez? Why not?
‘Camavinga is still a very young player. He left Rennes for Madrid when he was eighteen years old and he has played for six or seven years for Real Madrid.
‘He has won some big trophies too. This guy has been an amazing young prospect. I cannot judge his level for the last two seasons with what’s going on at the club. You have so many players that didn’t play well for Real Madrid for different reasons.
‘Camavinga can be very good because we know that at Chelsea most of them are young players. He’s got experience. When you come from Real Madrid to Chelsea having won many trophies and played there for so many years and you play for the national team, you arrive at the club with experience that’s probably missing at Chelsea.
‘Camavinga is a talented player, he would be a great fit.’
Could Chelsea sign Camavinga?
From a purely footballing perspective, Camavinga brings elite-level quality that CHELSEA have often lacked in midfield control. His ability to play as a deep-lying midfielder, a left-sided pivot, or even fill in at left-back gives him a level of versatility that is rare at the very top level.
On the ball, he is press-resistant, progressive, and calm under pressure, while off it he covers ground with an intensity that suits Premier League demands.
At Chelsea, he would immediately elevate the technical ceiling of the midfield. Pairing him with other young talents could give the club one of the most dynamic midfields in Europe for years to come.
He also has Champions League-winning experience at a young age, which is invaluable for a squad still learning how to consistently compete at the highest level.
However, the major obstacle is availability. Real Madrid are unlikely to sanction a sale of a player they view as a long-term cornerstone, and even if they did, the fee would be enormous. There is also the question of squad balance, as Chelsea already have significant investment in central midfield
