Barcelona could be preparing a major shake-up at left-back this summer, with fresh reports in Spain claiming the Catalan giants are willing to consider the sale of Man United target Alejandro Balde in order to finance a move for Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Barcelona’s interest in Cucurella has intensified in recent weeks as the club explores options to strengthen its defensive unit ahead of the new season.
The report claims sporting officials view the Chelsea star as an experienced and reliable option who could make an immediate impact under head coach Hansi Flick.
Cucurella, who emerged from Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy before establishing himself in professional football with Eibar, Getafe and Brighton, is reportedly open to a return to Spain.
The defender has been linked with several La Liga clubs in recent weeks, including Atletico Madrid, but Barcelona are said to be increasingly interested in bringing the defender back to Camp Nou.
The biggest surprise in the latest reports is the suggestion that Barcelona could sanction the departure of Balde to help fund a move.
However, Barcelona continue to face financial pressures and may need to generate significant transfer income before making major additions to their squad. Fichajes reports that Balde’s market value could provide the club with an opportunity to raise funds while creating space for Cucurella’s arrival.
Manchester United are understood to be monitoring developments closely. Chelsea are not actively seeking to sell Cucurella, but reports have indicated they would be willing to consider offers in the region of €40 million to €50 million should serious interest materialise.
The Spaniard’s future has become a growing topic of discussion since Fabrizio Romano revealed that a summer departure remains a possibility amid interest from clubs in his homeland.
While new Blues manager Xabi Alonso is believed to appreciate Cucurella’s qualities, the player is reportedly assessing his long-term options following another season of uncertainty at Stamford Bridge.
Any potential deal remains at an early stage, and there is no indication that formal negotiations have begun between the two clubs. Likewise, Barcelona have not publicly indicated any intention to part ways with Balde.
