“Missing games was part of plan” – Liverpool star skipped Reds matches for World Cup fitness

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has insisted he is fully fit for Brazil’s World Cup campaign, after an injury at club level threatened to derail his place in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans.

The 33-year-old has been wanted by Juventus, who made an approach earlier this year and offered him a three-year deal. We recently covered that Alisson has now chosen to remain with Liverpool and fulfil his contract until 2027.

Alisson missed the final stretch of Liverpool’s season with a thigh problem. At one stage, there were even concerns in Brazil that the injury could put his World Cup place at risk.

Now, speaking to Estadão ahead of Brazil’s opener against Morocco, he has revealed part of that absence was about making sure he reached the tournament in proper condition.

“I’m 100%. Missing games for Liverpool was part of the plan to make sure I was ready for the World Cup,” he said.

Alisson embraces Brazil questions

The focus of the chat was in Brazil’s chances in the World Cup, of course. Alisson admitted the team arrive at the tournament under more scrutiny than in 2018 and 2022. The Liverpool player does not see that as a problem. In fact, he believes it could suit the squad.

“It’s good that the national team arrives questioned,” he said. “That doesn’t haunt me. I know I’m on the right path. Sometimes, on the pitch, things don’t happen as we would like. Maybe if we had won more, the perception would be different.”

“What bothers me most is not having won [the World Cup]. There is always that feeling that you could have done something different.”

Brazil’s cycle before the 2026 World Cup has been turbulent. The national team faced political issues at the Brazilian FA and several managerial changes before Ancelotti’s arrival.

Alisson accepted those difficulties, but said the squad are now focused on the present.

“We felt the difficulties of this cycle on our skin, for several reasons,” he said. “But within that, the most important thing is the current moment. It is what is happening now.”

“There is a very strong presence, Carlo Ancelotti, which gives us calm in the environment, with focus on work, without distractions from controversies or other issues.”

Liverpool absence explained

Alisson’s physical condition was one of the major talking points after Brazil’s squad was announced. His absence from Liverpool matches was very looked at.

Another goalkeeper, Weverton, was included in the list by Ancelotti, despite not having previously been called up by the Italian. That led to questions in Brazil over whether the experienced Grêmio player had been selected as cover for Alisson. The Liverpool goalkeeper rejected that idea.

“I believe Weverton’s call-up is because of his merit, not anyone else’s demerit,” he said.

“Everyone knows I spent a period out before the World Cup, but also very much because of arriving at the World Cup 100%. I said before: the important thing is how we arrive at the World Cup.”

Alisson also spoke about the criticism he has faced over his form and fitness.

“I am my biggest critic,” he said. “No one will criticise me more than I do. But my criticism is based on day-to-day facts, technical and psychological reading. No one knows me better than I do.”

Focus on winning, not records

Alisson will now join Gylmar and Taffarel as the only goalkeepers to start three World Cups for Brazil. He described reaching that level as an honour, but refused to make personal history his priority.

“My focus is on this World Cup,” he said. “I will face it as if it were the last opportunity. I have learned this in life, to live each day. My focus is on this time. It is a huge opportunity to live another World Cup.”

“I feel honoured to reach this mark of goalkeepers who were in three World Cups.”

The Liverpool player then made clear the record he truly wants.

“I want to enter the other group,” he said. “I want to be among the World Cup champions. With the other 25 called-up players. That is my focus and the most important thing at the moment.”

For Liverpool, the comments confirm that Alisson’s careful end to the club season had a clear purpose. For Brazil, they underline that Ancelotti’s first-choice goalkeeper believes he is ready, physically and mentally, for another attempt at the title.
