There has been plenty of speculation surrounding his future, so much so that his agent – Ramy Abbas Issa – has felt it necessary to put out a statement addressing all the rumours.

Salah has just come through a messy public break-up with Liverpool, one that included tense exchanges with Arne Slot. He will no doubt be trying to park the drama until after the World Cup, while agents, journalists and supporters argue about his future thousands of miles away.

But now Egyptian goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shenawy, speaking to ON Sports, has poured more fuel on the fire and was probably the reason why Salah’s representative felt compelled to set the record straight.

El-Shenawy has suggested that Salah could yet remain at Anfield and that the departure has affected his compatriot “psychologically”:

“The prospect of leaving Liverpool has affected Mo psychologically, but the situation might change and he could still stay with the team. He even told me that he doesn’t know anything about his future yet.”

Nevertheless, Salah said after his final game at Anfield that his future would likely be decided after the World Cup:

“I am still watching, I have time now, I am going to the World Cup and then everything will be clear, but if there is a good opportunity before it I will decide, and if there is no one, I will make my decision after the World Cup.”

There is also the Ramy Abbas factor. Salah’s representative has been unusually vocal, warning fans to “beware” of the endless transfer leaks and stressing that even Salah does not yet know where he will be playing his football next season.

It tells you there is no secret agreement with Saudi Arabia, Turkey or anywhere else waiting to be unveiled the moment Egypt’s World Cup ends
