NFL Super Bowl Champ Facing Death Penalty In Shocking Trial
In the wake of the death of his girlfriend, former NFL linebacker Darron Lee has been indicted by a Hamilton County grand jury on a first-degree murder charge.
As a result of the indictment, the case against the 31-year-old former first-round draft pick is moving forward. In order to focus the state’s attention entirely on the murder charge, Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp dismissed an initial charge of tampering with evidence. Lee faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment if found guilty of first-degree murder, and local authorities intend to decide whether to pursue the death penalty in the coming weeks.
First responders discovered Lee’s girlfriend unresponsive at a rented home in Ooltewah, Tennessee, just east of Chattanooga. In spite of the efforts of emergency personnel, lifesaving measures were not successful. At the scene, Lee was identified as the suspect and taken into custody without bond. According to journalist Wesley Hitt:
During a preliminary hearing, detective Brian Lockhart testified that Lee initially told arriving deputies that his girlfriend had narcolepsy and likely fell in the shower. Investigators noted that the physical evidence did not match his story. Lockhart testified that an autopsy revealed the victim suffered severe brain trauma, a broken neck, extensive body bruising, a bite mark on her shoulder and thigh, facial injuries, and stab wounds to her legs.
Detectives also recovered cleaning supplies at the home, including bleach wipes and a spray bottle, which led to the initial tampering charge. Prosecutors presented body camera footage and digital evidence during the preliminary hearing, which included records showing that Lee allegedly used an artificial intelligence chatbot to look up medical advice regarding injuries and wounds instead of calling the police.
Lee is currently being held at the Hamilton County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on June 17.
