£400,000-a-week star tempted to re-join Liverpool, he's already impressed Iraola - report

Darwin Nunez is tempted by re-joining Liverpool in the upcoming transfer window as his agent Jorge Mendes continues to work on a summer move.

Liverpool wasted no time in replacing the sacked Arne Slot with Andoni Iraola, following the Spaniard's exit from Bournemouth after his contract expired.

The Spaniard showed his credentials by leading Bournemouth into Europe for the first time in their history, with a sixth-place finish meaning they will participate in the Europa League group stages next term.

Meanwhile, the Reds are in the Champions League and Iraola will know that he not only needs to freshen up the squad this summer, but he needs a stronger squad if they are to compete strongly in Europe's elite club competition, as well as becoming genuine title contenders again after a disappointing campaign.

One key area of focus for the recruitment team is likely to be the attack, with Mohamed Salah leaving Anfield and Hugo Ekitike out for the long-term after suffering a serious injury.

The Merseysiders have been left with a lack of quality and depth in their forward line as things stand, and they could look to add a winger and potentially a striker, if Iraola feels he can't rely on Alexander Isak in the first half of the campaign.

Nunez 'Tempted' by Liverpool Return as He Waits for News

There have been rumours surrounding a potential return to Anfield for Nunez in recent weeks, with Mundo Deportivo, via Sport Witness, providing a new update on the situation.

The Spanish outlet claim that as the Uruguay international considers terminating his £400,000-a-week contract with Saudi side Al-Hilal, he is awaiting news on possible interest from both Liverpool and Barcelona.

Nunez is said to be aware that his name came up in discussions between Barcelona, Joao Cancelo, Al-Hilal and Mendes during separate transfer talks, as the La Liga champions look to add a new striker to their squad for next season.

Their top target is Julian Alvarez, but Atletico Madrid are demanding big money for their forward after rejecting an offer worth €150m from arch-rivals Real Madrid.

So, the opportunity to potentially sign a proven striker in Europe on a free transfer could be attractive to both Barcelona and Liverpool, if they want cover for the injured Ekitike.

Nunez Has Already Impressed Andoni Iraola

While some Liverpool fans may scoff at a potential return to Anfield for Nunez, who was never a consistent scorer during his time at Merseyside, he has impressed Iraola in the past.

The 26-year-old had his best goalscoring record against Bournemouth in the Premier League, netting four times in six appearances against the Cherries.

In November 2023, Nunez scored a spectacular winning goal against the south coast outfit in the Carabao Cup, which saw Iraola label the striker as a difference-maker.

He said: "It's true that Darwin made the difference with a huge strike. A very good goal. And they (Liverpool) are the ones who are in the next round.

"There's not a lot we can do with those type of goals. He struck the ball amazingly."
