Leeds United have been trying to bolster the academy quite significantly in 2026. And, a previous youth target is now available for free.
As the transfer window doesn’t yet open for three more days, the only expected movement so far has been confirmed contract decisions and academy investment.
The club are expected to bring Silva Mexes to Thorp Arch from Man United. He would be the third academy product from the other side of the Pennines that’s heading to West Yorkshire.
Liverpool youngster Oakley Cannonier leaves Anfield a year on from Leeds United transfer approach
Back in early 2025, Leeds had taken Liverpool’s young striker Oakley Cannonier on trial at Thorp Arch with a view to potentially signing him.
The Leeds-born Cannonier was previously on the Whites’ books before switching West Yorkshire for Merseyside in 2015.
However, his incredible U18 goalscoring form was hampered significantly by long-term injury problems. Since then, he’s been effectively frozen out of plans in Liverpool’s youth system.
Leeds’ attempts to sign Cannonier – per This Is Anfield – collapsed as the two clubs failed to agree on sell-on clause.
Now, Cannonier is free to pursue other opportunities as Liverpool confirmed that the 21-year-old will leave upon expiry of his contract.

It would’ve been nice if Leeds managed to prise Cannonier from Anfield when the talks were ongoing previously. But, he’s not going to be on our radar now.
He hasn’t kicked a ball in Liverpool’s youth setup since autumn 2024. And, his most recent outing was actually on trial at Leeds.
Now 21, he won’t be on Leeds’ agenda for this summer. Although, the club will no doubt be keeping tabs on other players seemingly attainable from other academies.
If Leeds want to consolidate in the top flight, having a steady stream of talent coming through Thorp Arch is a way to get there. Even if new recruits don’t make their debuts, making money through selling them is a viable route.
