Arsenal in pole position to complete signing of£129m world-class attacker

Julian Alvarez to Arsenal: Arsenal lead chase for Julian Alvarez after Real Madrid knockback

Julian Alvarez to Arsenal: Spanish outlet AS reckon Arsenal have edged ahead in the chase for Julian Alvarez. The timing says a lot. Atletico Madrid appear determined to stop either Real Madrid or Barcelona from walking off with their prized forward. That stance, oddly enough, hands North London an opening nobody expected a few weeks back.

None of this comes cheap, mind.

Real Madrid had a massive bid worth €150m (£129m) knocked back earlier this week. Now, reports suggest Arsenal must at least match that figure to get talks moving. Crucially, the report frames Arsenal as Alvarez’s only realistic route out of the Spanish capital this summer. Atletico are shutting every other door. Land him, and he becomes the costliest signing in Arsenal’s history. It would eclipse previous club records by some distance.

A deal would also mark his comeback to English football for the first time since he left Manchester City back in 2024. That initial switch raised eyebrows, especially given how highly City valued him. Now, the tables have turned completely.

Does the maths actually stack up?

Call me sceptical. But don’t write it off just yet.

Paying €150m for a player who has been absolutely prolific since arriving in Spain isn’t completely reckless. Not when you consider what Arsenal have spent chasing far less productive forwards in recent windows. Mikel Arteta knows Alvarez inside out from their Manchester City days. That familiarity could smooth a move that, on paper, looks logistically messy.

Still, Atletico’s reluctance to sell to domestic rivals doesn’t automatically translate into a willingness to sell to an English club. Release clauses in Spanish football tend to be eye-watering for a reason. Historically, the Arsenal hierarchy has baulked at figures north of £100m. It is a massive financial hurdle.

Could it happen? Sure. Will it? That is much murkier. Arsenal’s transfer business under the current regime has been calculated, rarely flashy, and a deal of this size represents a genuine departure from that pattern. It is a completely different financial ball game. If the funds are there, and Alvarez genuinely fancies a return to England, this is worth watching closely over the coming weeks.
