NFL finds insufficient evidence against Stefon Diggs in chef assault case

The NFL spent six months investigating Stefon Diggs after his former personal chef alleged he physically attacked her during a pay dispute at his Massachusetts home. On Friday, the league closed the book on the matter without finding grounds for punishment.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday that the NFL notified Diggs its investigation had concluded.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed the outcome in a statement to the Associated Press:

“The league notified Stefon Diggs today that it concluded its investigation and there is insufficient evidence to support a finding of a personal conduct policy violation.”

The ruling follows a jury verdict from May in which Diggs was found not guilty of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery, the charges that arose from a December 2, 2025 incident at his home in Dedham, Massachusetts.

His former live-in chef, Jamila Adams, testified that Diggs slapped and attempted to choke her during an argument over money she claimed he owed her. Diggs pleaded not guilty in February, days after playing in Super Bowl LX, and his legal team maintained throughout the process that the accusations were false.

Diggs’ attorney Mitchell Schuster described the jury verdict at the time as validation of their position:

“The evidence has shown what we’ve maintained from day one: Mr. Diggs was wrongly accused, and this case represents exactly the kind of opportunistic targeting that players can face the moment they step off the field.”

What this ruling means for Diggs as a free agent heading into the 2026 season

Diggs was released by the New England Patriots in March, making him a free agent with his legal situation the primary obstacle to landing with a new team. That obstacle is now removed.

He posted his seventh career 1,000-yard receiving season during the Patriots’ 2025 Super Bowl run, catching passes from quarterback Drake Maye and playing a significant role in New England’s AFC title push before their Super Bowl LX loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

His production through the investigation, and his willingness to play through the criminal proceedings without missing games, were consistent talking points in his defense throughout the trial.

Teams that previously hesitated to pursue Diggs because of the personal conduct uncertainty will now have no such reason for caution. The receiver market this summer just got more competitive.
