Manchester United are braced for a hectic summer transfer window as the club seek to overhaul their squad. Boss Michael Carrick will be eager to strengthen his team as the club gear up for Champions League football next season.

Midfield is a crucial area for United following Casemiro's departure at the end of the season. An agreement has been reached for Atalanta's Ederson, who has recently earned a call-up to Brazil's World Cup squad, though additional signings are being pursued in that department.

United have shown interest in Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, who has already attracted two offers from Manchester City. The 23-year-old is poised to feature prominently for England at the World Cup as the tussle for his services intensifies.

West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes has also been linked with a switch to Old Trafford in the wake of the Hammers' relegation. United are said to be facing competition from Arsenal and Real Madrid for the 21-year-old.

Meanwhile, the Reds are reportedly targeting Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae, who is representing South Korea at the World Cup. MEN Sport examines some of the key stories surrounding United.

Man Utd move closer to £80m transfer

United have reportedly moved ahead of Arsenal in the battle to sign Mateus Fernandes. The Portugal international netted three times and provided four assists across 36 matches for West Ham but couldn't prevent the club from Premier League relegation.

The Times reports that United are optimistic about finalising a deal for Fernandes and are leading Arsenal in the chase for his services. The 21-year-old could command a fee approaching £80m, merely a year after his £38m transfer from Southampton.

Arsenal are claimed to be reluctant to match West Ham's asking price, which could boost United's prospects of securing a deal. However, Real Madrid may yet threaten to derail their pursuit, with new manager Jose Mourinho keen for the Spanish giants to make Fernandes a priority target.

Bayern Munich star re-emerges as target

United are reportedly monitoring how Bayern centre-back Kim fares at the World Cup. The 29-year-old completed the full game as his nation rallied from a goal down to beat Czechia 2-1 on Friday morning.

German publication TZ reports that Kim is on United's radar, noting that the club have dedicated time to scouting the defender. Juventus are also said to be interested in Kim, who arrived at Bayern in 2023.

United were previously linked with the centre-back before his move to Bayern from Napoli three years ago. Kim featured 37 times as Bayern secured the Bundesliga crown and lifted the DFB-Pokal last season.

Carrick possesses numerous centre-backs within his United squad, including Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven. Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt also experienced seasons hampered by injury and the manager will be hoping to depend on a consistent pairing next term.
