Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard
Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard will be forced to bow out of a glamour Liverpool trip to Malaysia if Andrew Cavenagh names him the next Ibrox boss.
Current Rangers boss Danny Rohl is weighing up an offer to become the next manager of RB Salzburg with the Austrians confident they can come up with the cash to prise the 37-year-old away from Ibrox.
Record Sport understands Cavenagh and the Ibrox board are pushing ahead with drawing up a shortlist of candidates to replace Rohl if an agreement is reached with Red Bull.
Gerrard is expected to be among the leading candidates with Derek McInnes and Kevin Muscat also highly admired by the decision-makers at Rangers.
Chief executive Jim Gillespie – speaking at North American Rangers Supporters' Association's annual convention – was asked if Gerrard and McInnes would be among the contenders.
He stated: "Those are the type of names that will be on the shortlist."
And any call to Gerrard to seal a blockbuster return to Ibrox would mean aborting an upcoming match for Liverpool Legends in The Far East.
The 46-year-old attended the press conference to promote the fixture with a Manchester United select on Saturday, October 3, but intimated a looming decision over his managerial future would rule him out.
Speaking last month, Gerrard said: "It's a fantastic event in a couple of months' time. I'm hoping to be available to come over to be a part of it. I should have a decision in two, three weeks"

Gerrard – who delivered the Premiership title in 2021 – has been approached twice by Rangers before they appointed Russell Martin and Rohl but insiders in both camps had agreed to “leave the door open for the future”.
Now a third call to the Gerrard camp could be looming if Rohl exits Ibrox.
