Thomas Tuchel has always been a manager willing to back his convictions, and his decision to invite a group of young, uncapped players to England’s pre-World Cup training camp in Florida was one of the most intriguing of his tenure.
Four players were brought in to supplement training numbers, experience the senior environment, and demonstrate that the future of English football is in capable hands.

England have now confirmed that all four have officially departed following the conclusion of the Florida camp, with the senior squad preparing to travel to their World Cup base in Kansas City ahead of the tournament opener against Croatia.
Tuchel was unequivocal in his praise for the group, highlighting not just their ability on the pitch but the character and professionalism they showed throughout.
17 year old Rio Ngumoha, Liverpool’s most exciting young talent, and now officially the fifth-youngest player in senior England history, departs the camp having turned heads at every level.
The left winger came off the bench in England’s 1-0 warm-up victory over New Zealand and produced a performance of such freedom, directness, and technical assurance that he earned the Player of the Match award, in his first senior international appearance.
He arrived at Liverpool’s youth system in the summer of 2024, moving from Chelsea’s prestigious academy in a transfer that required a Professional Football Compensation Committee tribunal to resolve, eventually settling at a minimum £2.8 million development fee.
The move, controversial at the time, has already been thoroughly vindicated.
Arne Slot integrated him into first-team training almost immediately, and by the 2025/26 season Ngumoha had carved out a genuine senior role, making 19 Premier League appearances, completing 30 of 43 attempted dribbles at a 69.8% success rate, and winning the Premier League Home Grown Debutant of the Season award.
Bayern Munich came calling this summer.
Liverpool told them no without hesitation.
His England journey, though, carries a poignant footnote.
Despite featuring in the Florida camp and making his debut, FIFA regulations prevent him from being added to England’s official tournament squad, even in a genuine injury emergency.
Because he was omitted from the original provisional 55-man list, he is legally ineligible regardless of circumstance.
Tuchel addressed that reality with warmth rather than regret.
“That showed me his character,” he said of Ngumoha’s attitude throughout camp.
“He gets a chance to get a step closer.”
He will watch the World Cup from home.
But the experience of being in that environment at seventeen, will stay with him for the rest of his career.
England’s future just walked out of the Florida camp with his head held high.
An important part of our preparations so far 👏
