Alan Shearer says transfer links with Yan Diomande and Bradley Barcola make perfect sense for Liverpool, with Andoni Iraola in need of some fresh options in wide areas.

Last season, Liverpool was held back by having underperforming forwards and a lack of speed. Cody Gakpo struggled for large periods, while Mohamed Salah was a shadow of his former self.

Heading into the summer, injecting something new in that department is a priority, and Shearer believes that Diomande and Barcola could be the answer for Reds sporting director Richard Hughes.

"Liverpool are going to have to go again in the transfer market," the former England and Newcastle striker told Betfair.

"Salah's gone, so they obviously need someone to replace him. They've also got Rio Ngumoha, who's obviously a great talent, but for the future.

"So Liverpool need several players, I think, if they want to compete again at the very top. And certainly, in wide positions, they're going to have to strengthen.

"I'm not surprised with who they're being linked with like Diomande and Barcola. I guess it's only a matter of time before that would be the position that they announce."

Elsewhere, Liverpool may still need some more depth at the back despite the arrival of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes.

French international Ibrahima Konate has departed as a free agent and is expected to join Real Madrid, though that has not yet been officially confirmed.

In midfield, there might be a signing or two required, depending on exits. Alexis Mac Allister has been linked with a departure this week, while Curtis Jones has interest from Inter Milan.

The Reds might need a right-back, with Conor Bradley having been sidelined with injury for some time, while they could use Kostas Tsimikas as the back-up to Milos Kerkez as he comes back from a loan with AS Roma.

Liverpool.com says: Adding pace and quality in wide areas is the number one priority for the Reds this summer. They need more speed, and that will have a transformative impact.

Having better quality out wide will get more out of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, and will mean Liverpool being able to get up the pitch more quickly, offering a counter-attacking threat and alleviating pressure at the back.
