Bruno Fernandes told to go on strike unless Portugal make Cristiano Ronaldo decision

Portugal are one of the pre-World Cup favourites to go the distance for the first time this summer.

Roberto Martinez has a raft of attacking talent at his disposal, which is good enough to put any team to the sword.

Bruno Fernandes is the creative lynchpin, the Manchester United man coming into the tournament on the back of a record-breaking Premier League campaign having set the record for the most assists in a single season.

Vitinha, Joao Neves, Rafael Leao and Pedro Neto also made the cut for the summer showpiece.

The experienced Cristiano Ronaldo leads the charge for Portugal but there are concerns over the 41-year-old's goalscoring capability.

Ronaldo failed to net at Euro 2024 and made a number of comical misses during Portugal's pre-tournament friendly wins over Chile and Nigeria.

And Angelina Kelly delivered her hot take on talkSPORT Daily on Saturday, stating that United star Fernandes should refuse to play for the national team unless Ronaldo is axed.

"It's time for my hot take now and it's about Bruno Fernandes, because I feel like we don't talk about him enough on this podcast," Kelly began.

"But Portugal edition. So, with World Cup fever sweeping the world, there's naturally a lot of chat about which teams have a realistic chance of winning the tournament.

"One of them is Portugal and they've never quite performed to the best of their ability at a World Cup. I think their best finish is still back in 1966 when they came third.

"But they're fifth in the world, their midfield is stacked with talent. You've got players like Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, Joao Neves.

"I don't like to mention Fernandes but he's 31 years of age, may not have a better opportunity to win the World Cup, especially in the vein of form that he's been in this season.

"And I'm sure Adrian, I'll beat you to it, it's because there won't be another season where he plays such a small volume of games. So that's why he's in good form, I'm already one step ahead of you.

"Without going on about him too much, I think if Portugal do win the World Cup and he has a great tournament paired with the performances with Man United, he could be a Ballon d'Or contender.

"I'm not saying he's going to win the Ballon d'Or just before anyone jumps at me, but he could be a contender. But he won't have a shot if Portugal continue to entertain the Cristiano Ronaldo vanity project.

"So Bruno Fernandes, I think, should refuse to play for Portugal if Martinez keeps starting Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo in action for Portugal

"Ronaldo wasn't good enough at this level at the last Euros, probably wasn't good enough at the last World Cup either. We're now in 2026, the guy is just not letting go.

"Some of the clips from the friendlies, it was a bit embarrassing, missing one on ones, not passing to the better placed teammates in the box.

"He's looking past it to be honest. And Roberto Martinez, I think it seems like he's just accepted the fact that being Portugal manager equals picking Ronaldo as a prerequisite.

"The Portuguese FA are too obsessed with the Ronaldo gravy train and the money that it brings. Someone needs to make a stand and put an end to this ridiculousness.

"So Bruno Fernandes, one of the key players and stars for Portugal, needs to go to Roberto Martinez and say that Ronaldo cannot be named in the starting XI, otherwise he'll quit the team and go home because Ronaldo is ruining his and all his teammates chances of winning the World Cup and damaging his own legacy in the process.

"If Ronaldo cared about Portugal as much as his teammates did, he'd have retired a while ago.

"But he's only in this for himself, so why should Bruno or Vitinha or Bernardo Silva give up their shot at glory just to indulge him?"

With 143 goals to his name, Ronaldo is Portugal's all-time record goalscorer.
