The Arsenal transfer market is active again. Nico Williams has expressed his interest in the Gunners. The left winger may join the North London club next season.

Williams interested in Arsenal transfer

Williams is back on Arsenal’s priority list. As per TEAMtalk, the left winger is reconsidering his options. The North London club is pursuing him since 2024. Interestingly, they weren’t the only club to do so. Barcelona was equally aggressive in pursuing Williams.

Williams currently represents the Athletic Bilbao club. He joined the Spanish club in 2021. He previously played for the reserve team Bilbao Athletic between 2020 and 2021. Before that, the 23-year-old also played for Basconia between 2019 and 2020.

Williams’ stats for the 2025-26 season as per FotMob:

Competitions Matches Goals Assists

La Liga 25 6 3

Copa Del Rey 4 0 1

UEFA Champions League 3 0 0

Why has Nico Williams resumed his interest in Arsenal?

Arsenal jostled with Barcelona for Nico Williams between 2024 and 2025. However, he turned both of them down. He signed a contract extension with Athletic Bilbao last year that would expire in 2035.

So what changed now? Apparently, Williams is not satisfied with his performance in the 2025-26 season. Athletic Bilbao made it to the semifinals of Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana. However, they finished 12th overall in the 2025-26 La Liga. They also made an early exit from the Champions League.

On the other hand, Arsenal had a dream run last year. With the lone exception of the FA Cup, the Gunners reached the finals of almost every major European tournament. They also won back the Premier League title after 22 years. This is also why Williams is reconsidering the offer to join the North London club. Arsenal missed out on the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League title though. The Gunners lost to Paris Saint-Germain 4-3 on penalties.

Future gameplan for Nico Williams

Williams is currently preparing for the FIFA World Cup. He is a part of the final squad announced by manager Luis de la Fuente on May 25. The left winger aims to make it big at the World Cup. He has been a part of the team that won the UEFA Euro 2024. Spain won the finals against England 2-1. In fact, Williams scored the opening goal for his team in the 47th minute.

However, if he wants to enter Arsenal, Williams must address a few issues first. He has nothing much to worry about on the disciplinary front. However, the same cannot be said about his fitness. Williams missed out a significant portion of the **football**season last year due to multiple injuries. He nearly missed out on the World Cup after an injury ruled him out for the final leg of the season in May 2026. If he overcomes these concerns, the left winger has a promising future ahead.

Spain are placed in group H of the ongoing FIFA World Cup. The Spanish team will commence their campaign against Cape Verde on June 15. La Roja will then face Saudi Arabia in their next group match on June 21. They will then face Uruguay for their final group match on June 27. For players like Nico Williams, this World Cup is a golden opportunity to showcase their skills. Spain haven’t won the World Cup since their maiden victory at the 2010 edition. The current edition is a chance to make it count.
