The [New England Patriots](https://nesn.com/new-england-patriots) released Stefon Diggs in the offseason, and now that the NFL has deemed there's not enough evidence to find him in violation of the personal conduct policy, teams could entertain signing him.
Diggs may not have many years left, so he will surely want to sign with a contender. While there are plenty of contenders who could sign him and give him a role, some teams make more sense than others. Diggs was a 1,000-yard receiver last season, and proved he is capable of being a No. 1 option on a Super Bowl contender. He is unlikely to sign with a team where he is an afterthought in the passing game.
The Washington Commanders may make the most sense for Diggs in free agency. For one, they are one season removed. from playing in the NFC Championship Game. They also have a talented young quarterback in Jayden Daniels, who received MVP votes as a rookie. Second, they have a need at receiver. Last, but not least, Diggs is from Maryland, so he would be joining his hometown team.
Besides Terry McLaurin, the Commanders do not have a proven target that Daniels can rely on in the clutch. Diggs would be that player. They had Deebo Samuel last season, but he is a free agent, and his return is unlikely. The team drafted Antonio Williams, but he's a rookie, and Diggs could help take some of the load off of him.
Sure, Diggs could sign with a team like the Los Angeles Rams if they want him, but he would not be able to make the same impact he would with a team like the Commanders. The Rams already have Davante Adams and Puka Nacua, so Diggs would be the third option. Diggs has some good football in the tank and does not seem like the kind of player who would take a backset in an offense to ring chase.
