Cody Gakpo could be heading out of Anfield this summer, with the latest transfer news confirming Tottenham are ready to put £60m on the table for the Liverpool winger.
Fabrizio Romano hints Liverpool are open to selling Cody Gakpo
As reported by TEAMtalk, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool will seriously consider selling Gakpo if a big offer arrives this summer. Romano made it clear that the Dutch winger’s place at Anfield is not guaranteed. He was direct about the situation, saying:“There is interest in Cody Gakpo. If some club arrives with a proposal, it is going to be on Liverpool to decide whether he stays or leaves. Liverpool are very busy with wingers.”
Liverpool have already lost Mohamed Salah this summer and are now actively looking to strengthen in wide areas. Romano said the club and Andoni Iraola will carefully weigh any big offer.
Cody Gakpo’s Season 2025/26 stats, as per FotMob:
Competition Appearances Goals Assists Successful dribbles
Premier League 36 7 5 34
UCL 11 2 1 9
FA Cup 4 0 0 1
Tottenham preparing a £60m bid for the Dutchman
As reported by CaughtOffside, Spurs are believed to be putting together a £60m offer for Gakpo this summer. Tottenham are leading the race and have started working on a personal terms package. As per transfermarkt, Gakpo managed just six Premier League goals last season, which was a clear dip from his best form. Despite that, De Zerbi is understood to see genuine value in signing him. The Dutchman came through PSV Eindhoven before joining Liverpool, and has represented the Netherlands at international level throughout his career.
Gakpo’s current contract at Anfield will run out in the summer of 203. But, if the move goes through, the player can give De Zerbi a wide attacker who can cut inside or stay wide. That kind of versatility fits a high-pressing system perfectly.
Spurs badly missed a reliable goalscorer and creator in wide areas last season. They finished 17th in the Premier League in 2024-25, surviving relegation largely on the back of their Europa League triumph, which secured Champions League football despite a torrid domestic campaign. Gakpo, at his best, is exactly the type of player who can solve that problem.
Why this deal makes sense for both clubs?
For the Reds, selling Gakpo at £60m this summer makes clear financial sense. As reported by TEAMtalk, the club is chasing bigger names in wide areas, linking them to Yan Diomande and Bradley Barcola in a double deal worth close to £200m. That level of spending requires funds to come in first, and offloading Gakpo would go a long way toward funding that move. Gakpo has reportedly submitted a formal exit request at Liverpool this summer. He fell out with the club following their decision to sack Arne Slot, the Dutch manager who Andoni Iraola replaced ahead of this season.
For Tottenham, this signing fits a clear pattern in their summer recruitment. They are building a squad full of experienced, Premier League-tested players for De Zerbi. Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson bring defensive solidity. Palhinha is back at the club to control the midfield, and Gakpo would complete that picture in attack. De Zerbi wants leaders across the pitch, and this group of signings reflects that ambition.
At 27, Gakpo arrives at the right age with enough top-flight experience to hit the ground running. Tottenham would not just be signing a squad option if this deal goes through. They would be landing a winger who has already proven he can change games at the highest level. In the right system under De Zerbi, there is every reason to believe he can rediscover that form for Spurs.
