Man United stance on 17 g/a star becomes clear as Carrick's transfer vision emerges - report

Manchester United could sign a striker this summer if Joshua Zirkzee leaves the club.

Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski has emerged as a surprise target for the Mancunian giants. He is set to become a free agent at the end of this month.

The 37-year-old registered 14 goals and three assists in 31 appearances, helping Barcelona retain the La Liga title.

Journalist Tyrone Marshall has now ruled out the possibility of United signing Lewandowski.

He told Manchester Evening News: “I can’t see this happening. United do want an experienced back-up for Sesko, but someone of a lower profile than Lewandowski, who would still command huge wages and is such a big name he would probably expect to start ahead of the Slovenian.

“He’s a great player and his record last season was still good, but at 37, there is no way he fits into United’s structure or the style of play Michael Carrick wants.”

Lewandowski is also likely to struggle with the physicality of the Premier League, considering his age. United should not explore a move for him.

United could also consider a deal for Brazilian striker Igor Thiago. He scored 22 league goals last season, a record return for a Brentford player in a single Premier League season.

However, a move for the 24-year-old is expected to be expensive as he still has five years left on his contract. He could also demand a sizeable salary.

West Ham United’s Callum Wilson could be a good fit for United. He scored seven league goals for the Hammers last season, playing mainly as a substitute.

The 34-year-old also has ample Premier League experience. With his contract expiring this month, he is available on a free transfer and could be tempted by the opportunity to join a club of United’s stature late in his career.
