Ruben Amorim emerges as leading candidate for AC Milan job

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United tenure ended in January 2026, after a stint at the club marking one of its all-time lows.
The Portuguese head coach led the Red Devils to a 15th-place finish in the 2024/25 season, as well as a dismal Europa League final loss at the hands of an equally poor Tottenham Hotspur. Under his management, United won just 25 of 63 games.
Given another chance going into the 2025/26 season, Amorim’s results improved, but comments in the media criticising the club’s hierarchy ultimately handed him the sack.
According to the Athletic, Ruben Amorim is the leading candidate to take over at AC Milan, as part of the Italian giants’ ‘thorough and robust process’ to restructure after Massimiliano Allegri and the executive team were sacked in May.
Former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick was interviewed for the head of football role that will sit above the prospective head coach, but his long-term future lies with the Austrian national side.
If the move for Ruben Amorim goes ahead, it won’t be long before United meet their former head coach once again. The Red Devils are set to play against AC Milan in pre-season on August 15. It will be one of the more intriguing friendly fixtures.
But the two won’t meet competitively next season. Manchester United successfully qualified for the UEFA Champions League, finishing 3rd in the Premier League under Michael Carrick, who took over from Amorim in January, but AC Milan failed to do the same.
Massimiliano Allegri’s sacking was down to this, so the higher-ups at AC Milan are clearly pinning their hopes on boss Ruben Amorim to complete a turnaround.
In order to succeed in Italy, Amorim will need to adapt better. He appeared out of his depth at times in the Premier League, and refused to switch from his 3-4-3 system, which players struggled to grasp. The 41-year-old is clearly a very competent manager, shown by a good stint at Sporting CP, but must now learn from his mistakes in England.
