Former 49ers, Cowboys All-Pro linebacker dies at 36

Linebacker Aldon Smith, who played six seasons in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys and Oakland Raiders, has died. He was 36.

“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith,” the 49ers said in a statement June 13. “Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen.

“Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon.”

According to Chase Senior of the 49ers Report, Smith was pronounced dead on arrival at the Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose.

Smith played for the 49ers from 2011-14, making the All-Pro team in 2012. He played for the Raiders in 2015 and the Cowboys in 2020.
