Paul Joyce of The Times does not tweet casually. When the respected Times journalist puts a name into the transfer conversation, it means something real is happening. And what Joyce has just confirmed is that Brentford, who are building quietly and smartly under their new setup, have entered the race for Jeremy Monga, the 16-year-old Leicester City winger who Arsenal had apparently wrapped up.

This is not a minor complication. This is a genuine hijack attempt, and it arrives at exactly the moment when Arsenal fans were beginning to treat the deal as done. Nicolo Schira had reported personal terms were agreed. Ben Jacobs said a verbal agreement was close. Fabrizio Romano confirmed Arsenal were pushing. The deal felt inevitable. Brentford have just reminded everyone that in football, nothing is done until it is done.

Born in Coventry in July 2009, Jeremy Ngola Monga has been at Leicester’s academy since the age of eight. He made history on April 7, 2025 when, aged 15 years and 271 days, he became the second-youngest player ever to appear in the Premier League behind only Arsenal’s own Ethan Nwaneri (though since Max Dowman has beaten him on 15 years and 235 days). He had to play in a blank sponsorless shirt because UK gambling advertising laws prevented a 15-year-old from wearing Leicester’s BC.GAME-sponsored kit. The image became iconic before he had even touched the ball.
His defining traits are speed, two-footedness and an elite ability to carry the ball past defenders described by scouts as a natural trickster with genuine end product. He can play on either wing or as a number ten. Van Nistelrooy praised him on debut: “He showed glimpses of his great qualities. He is a fantastic talent, a great boy.”
Since then, Monga has gone on to establish himself as a regular in the England Under-19 setup, despite only turning 17 this July.
If Arsenal complete this signing, they would have all three of the Premier League’s youngest-ever debutants Nwaneri, Max Dowman and Monga at the same club. That is a remarkable and intentional strategy.
Why Jeremy Monga to Arsenal transfer is more complicated than it looks?

The fee situation is genuinely complex. Monga is currently on an academy scholarship at Leicester. He has rejected the opportunity to sign a professional contract, and will not be able to sign one anywhere until he turns 17 on July 10. Until then, his status creates an unusual transfer dynamic, Leicester want around £15 million, which would shatter the record for a League One club, but if no agreement is reached before a professional contract is signed, a tribunal could set a significantly lower fee.
That tribunal risk is what motivates Leicester to move quickly, and it is also what creates the opening for clubs like Brentford to complicate the picture. If Brentford can convince Monga and his family that their development pathway is superior, more first-team minutes sooner, a clearer route to the top flight they have a genuine argument. Brentford’s track record with young attacking players is excellent. Their data-driven approach to development is well documented.
Arsenal’s counter-argument writes itself: Premier League champions, the club that produced and played Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman, Mikel Arteta’s proven willingness to use young talent. But Monga has to want it, and a 16-year-old’s decision is not always the most straightforward.
Author Opinion
Arsenal remain the frontrunners. Personal terms are agreed, Romano has confirmed the push, and the Nwaneri-Dowman pipeline is a genuinely compelling development story to sell to a 16-year-old. But Paul Joyce reporting Brentford’s entry is not nothing, Joyce does not waste words, and Brentford have form for winning these races when nobody expects them to.
Arsenal need to finalise the fee with Leicester before July 10, when Monga turns 17 and the legal landscape shifts. They have the advantage. They just cannot afford to take their foot off the gas.
