Yesterday, we read about Victor Kristiansen possibly moving to Greek club Panathinaikos. His time at Leicester has been nearly a nightmare since he joined in January 2023 from Copenhagen for £17 million.

To experience three relegations without being much involved, might be hard for him to take. After the season finished, Victor expressed his feelings regarding a League One situation, saying he had not intention of playing at this level when joining Leicester. That 2023-24 season, when Leicester were promoted from EFL Championship to Premier League under Enzo Maresca, Victor Kristiansen, spent the entire season on loan at Bologna.

He is still young, only 23 years of age, and on a long term deal at Leicester, ending on the 30th of June 2028. Kristiansen has represented Denmark at various levels. After a period being named in the full squad, Kristiansen finally made his full international debut for the senior side when he came on as a second half substitute away to Slovenia in a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier. To date he has played 18 times for Denmark at full international level.

This season he was on the field for the Leicester first team in just 6 outings. During last season, the left-back suffered a knee injury that required surgery. The issue sidelined the him for an extended period, keeping him out of action for latter months of the campaign.

He has over the seasons at Leicester and on loan at Bologna, as well as in his earler days at Copenhagen, showed his best, when being able to make his runs up and down the left side of the field. Playing for Bologna in Serie A, being in a team dominating games, he really had a major value.

The problem and struggles were seen when he as a left back was pressured from the opponent and often being left alone to defend his side of the field, having little or no special cover, he looked very exposed. Premier League is a brutal place to be when playing in a team struggling to get on the front foot.

Panathinaikos is being considered as a potential destination for Victor Kristiansen. His former youth coach at Copenhagen, Jacob Neestrup, is now the head coach there after being let go from Copenhagen earlier this year. Casper Ankergren has also joined as the new goalkeeper coach, coming in from Chelsea. These connections might explain the interest, possibly prompting Leicester to receive a bid. A transfer fee of around £3 million should be acceptable to facilitate Kristiansen’s exit and reduce the wage bill.

The problem over the last four years for Leicester is to get the value back that the club intentially paid in a transfer fee, but to get something must be much better than having an unbalanced squad, far too many players on certain positions and throwing money out the window.
