Liverpool may look to "cash in" on star who's been called one of the world's best - journalist

**Liverpool may end up deciding to “cash in” on key midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, according to a big new claim from journalist Pete O’Rourke.**

Mac Allister endured a terrible 2025/26 season by his high standards, not only lacking energy but also failing to provide his usual elite quality on the ball.

The 27-year-old is currently on World Cup duty with Argentina, as he looks to retain the trophy, but there is ongoing talk surrounding his future at Liverpool.

Speaking to [_Football Insider_](https://www.footballinsider247.com/liverpool/sources-liverpool-give-real-madrid-encouragement-in-alexis-mac-allister-pursuit), O’Rourke said that the Reds may decide to sell the midfielder if the right offer arrives, but stressed that they aren’t desperate to move him on:

_“Liverpool have to wheel and deal in the market this summer to try and raise some cash to boost their own transfer kitty. Mac Allister is somebody that they could reluctantly cash in on. He still has good value and is a World Cup winner, so if he goes and has a good World Cup again this month, then that’ll obviously maybe bring other teams to the table as well._

_“Liverpool, right now, are looking to strengthen rather than weaken the squad, but if they are needing to sell players, Mac Allister could be one of those that could be sacrificed.”_

**Should Liverpool sell Alexis Mac Allister this summer?**

----------------------------------------------------------

Liverpool have such a tough call to make with Mac Allister, weighing up whether he has peaked as a footballer or, like many, he simply had one bad season under Arne Slot.

The Argentine is such a key man for the Reds when fully fit and in form, with journalist [Jordan Chamberlain](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/articles/crg6px2p76eo) once calling him “one of the best midfielders on the planet”, and the hope is that he returns to that level again, with age still on his side.

That said, Mac Allister has played relentlessly at the highest level without much of a break for years now, so Liverpool may feel that replacing him with a younger signing makes more sense.

It will be interesting to see how he performs at the World Cup, and if he suddenly looks quicker and more influential, it may be enough to sway the thinking of Andoni Iraola, Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes.
