Manchester United's compensation payments to Ruben Amorim will be slashed should he be appointed by AC Milan. Amorim is close to being appointed by the Italian giants, which would be his first job since being sacked by United.

In January, Amorim was sacked by United after just 14 months in charge. The Reds faced a hefty compensation bill of £15.9million to cover Amorim's departure, along with his staff, which included coaches Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido, Emanuel Ferro and Jorge Vital.

However, it's understood that figure will be slashed should Amorim be appointed by Milan, who are advanced in talks with the Portuguese.

Milan considered Andoni Iraola before his Liverpool appointment, while former Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner was also in the running, but Amorim is now moving closer to being appointed at the San Siro.

Massimiliano Allegri was sacked by Milan last month after failing to secure Champions League qualification. Milan finished fifth in Serie A, and the club's board described the season as an "unequivocal failure."

Milan lost seven of their final 13 games in the campaign as their bitter rivals Inter Milan won their second league title in three seasons.

Amorim was sacked by United in January amid rising tensions with the board. Amorim called out the club's decision-makers when he spoke to the media after facing Leeds, suggesting others should focus on their jobs.

United appointed Amorim from Sporting Lisbon in November 2024. He oversaw the worst season at United for 51 years and suffered defeat against Tottenham in the Europa League final.

In the Premier League, Amorim had the worst win ratio (32 per cent), the worst goals conceded per game ratio (1.53) and the lowest clean sheet ratio (15 per cent) of any United manager in history.

However, Amorim was sacked by United with the club in sixth position, well positioned to return to Europe, and he was credited with improving standards at Carrington during his brief spell in charge.

United CEO Omar Berrada recently praised Amorim, saying: "Ruben Amorim deserves a lot of credit. In a very difficult season he helped raise standards in the dressing room. I am sure he will go on to be a successful coach."

Amorim's potential appointment at Milan means a reunion with United is on the cards at the end of the summer, as the two clubs will meet in a pre-season friendly in Wroclaw, Poland on August 15.
