Matheus Cunha made his World Cup debut against Morocco on day three of the tournament as Brazil got their pursuit for a ninth world title underway.
Cunha was expected to start the game, with outlets even reporting on leaks that the striker would start, although was named on the bench with Igor Thiago chosen over him.
The Manchester United striker would get his chance, though, with him brought on in the 61st minute for Thiago as Brazil looked to score a winning goal.
He was not able to deliver on this aim, however, with the game ending 1-1. Victory for Scotland in their opening group stage fixture against Haiti has moved the European nation top with Brazil now in third behind both Morocco and the Scots.
Brazilian outlets have now been reacting as they outline what happened in the game, what was good, and what could be improved.
Globo highlighted Cunha’s efforts, stating: “With the exception of Matheus Cunha’s efforts to regroup and connect the midfield to the attack, Brazil was practically ineffective from the attacking midfield”.
The outlet also added that “even with the number 9 on his back, he didn’t play as a center forward, but rather on the left side of the attack.
“At 32 minutes, he made a great pass to Vini, which resulted in a dangerous play. He was also important without the ball, frequently dropping back to defend.”
ESPN Brazil praised Matheus Cunha and stated: “Of those who came off the bench, he was the one who performed best. He moved out of the box, helped in marking, and showed enough to deserve more playing time.”
Brazil meet with Haiti in the second round of group stage fixtures, a game that could present Cunha with the opportunity to impress.
With the nation third in Group C currently, victory is arguably crucial against Haiti.
