Russell Wilson’s Painful Reaction to Death of 49ers Star

Retired NFL quarterback Russell Wilson joined the football world in mourning on Saturday.

The San Francisco 49ers announced on Saturday that Aldon Smith died at theage of 36. They did not disclose the former All-Pro linebacker’s cause of death.

Smith entered the league as the No. 7 pick in 2011 out of Missouri. The league named him a first-team All-Pro and he received his lone Pro Bowl selection in 2012. The 6-foot-4, 255-pound athlete suited up for the 49ers, Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys.

Smith appeared in 75 games, recording 228 combined tackles, including 172 solo efforts. He also amassed 52.5 tackles, six forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. Former and current players, including Wilson, poured in tributes.

Russell Wilson Mourns Death of Aldon Smith

Wilson posted an Instagram story following the death of Smith. Therecently retired quarterback reposted a graphic of the news and expressed disbelief with his message.

“Oh no 🕊️🕊️🕊️🥺. One of the most talented guys I ever got to play against,”Wilson wrote.

Smith and Wilson played against each other four times. Their last meeting occurred during a regular-season game between the Seahawks and Cowboys on Sept. 14, 2020. Smith’s team lost 38-21 that night, but he managed to sack the one-time Super Bowl champion three times. His performance demonstrated what he was capable of on the field, as he rose to the occasion and wasn’t scared to go up against the best.

They shared the same roster after the linebacker signed a one-year deal with the Seahawks in April 2021. However, the team released him prior to the regular season.

Smith enjoyed a successful collegiate career with the Tigers, earning a first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2010. Smith was once one of the most talented players at his position and had a promising NFL future ahead of him. However, he faced several legal troubles, including DUI arrests and illegal possession of assault weapons, which derailed his career.
