Steven Gerrard plans move for Manchester United coach

Journalist Alan Nixon is reporting that Steven Gerrard is currently planning a return to football management.

Steven Gerrard has been keeping himself busy since his last stint in the managerial dugout.

Since leaving Al-Ettifaq in Saudi, he has been linked with a return to a range of clubs.

Rangers, one of his former clubs, have been linked with the player on a number of occasions.

It appears that the latest links are not going to turn into reality, with Derek McInnes favourite to replace Danny Rohl at Ibrox.

Even before that, many in the media were discussing Steven Gerrard temporarily replacing Arne Slot towards the end of last season.

That was another talking point that didn’t come to fruition.

Gerrard has instead been playing the role of pundit over the past few months.

The former Liverpool and England captain was on co-commentary duties for the UEFA Champions League final for TNT Sports, a broadcaster for whom he does a lot of work.

But with no formal duties during the FIFA World Cup 2026, Steven Gerrard it appears is planning his next move.

And it appears that his next move involves a link to Manchester United – Liverpool’s arch-rivals.

Journalist Alan Nixon is reporting that Steven Gerrard is currently planning a return to football management.

Nixon explains that Gerrard was up for a return to Rangers and has recently been linked with a move to Burnley – who are looking for a permanent replacement for Scott Parker.

But it’s the Manchester United connection part that is most interesting.

That’s because Nixon reports that Steven Gerrard wants to make current Manchester United assistant coach Steve Holland his new assistant.

Previously, Gerrard has worked with Michael Beale.

But anyone following the career of Beale will have noticed that he’s currently engaged as a consultant in Saudi, after managing clubs in England and abroad himself.

Steven Gerrard knows Steve Holland from his time at England as well as in the game in general and the Manchester United man is his current preference to become his new assistant coach.

Manchester United will surely have something to say about that, having tied Holland down to a new contract just recently to continue working with Michael Carrick at Old Trafford.

Whatever the case may be, it’s certainly clear that Steven Gerrard is planning his return to football and is planning the makeup of his coaching staff if and when he gets his next role.
