Manchester United now sit in the hot seat to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

After Arsenal’s interest reportedly cooled, Real Madrid accepted that the Red Devils will make the signing, putting the Red Devils at the forefront for the 21-year-old.

West Ham won’t let their star player go without a fight, and have set their demands at £80m to part ways with Fernandes. After Nottingham Forest’s valuation of Elliot Anderson, this might not look too bad a deal for higher-ups at Old Trafford.

But West Ham’s stance is open to change. Following allegations about the conduct of majority shareholder David Sullivan, Daniel Kretinsky has bought shares from another club investor to rise above Sullivan, giving him the lion’s share of control over West Ham United.

In an interview with The Times, Kretinsky, who bought his initial stake in West Ham in November 2021, said,“We have a very credible strategy. We don’t need to sell the players for financial reasons. We are doing this to make sure we are promoted back to the Premier League immediately. That is our only goal.

“Key players are waiting for us. They want to see there is a real chance of keeping the squad together. What matters is funding, strategy and consistency. We have spoken to all of them. They need to see that our project is real and serious. Promotion is our only goal.”

It’s a huge statement of intent from the Irons’ new majority shareholder, whose control has risen from 27% to 43%, exceeding the under-fire David Sullivan’s 38.8%. For a club devoid of any hope in the last couple of years, Kretinsky’s fighting talk will be music to fans’ ears.

Kretinsky has made his point of view explicitly clear – he does not wish West Ham to sell their best players. It’s now over to Manchester United to offer a valid fee to see them part ways with their prized possession, Mateus Fernandes.
