Jose Mourinho is set to make his first statement appointment for Real Madrid after being announced as head coach of the Spanish giants on Thursday.
The former Manchester United manager has worked with many members of staff and has a trusted coaching team, but is set to bring in an appointment specifically sought by him.
In his first stint at Real Madrid, Mourinho brought in German midfielder Sami Khedira in the summer of his arrival. History is set to repeat itself, as according to the Athletic, Mourinho is close to appointing the 2014 World Cup winner, this time in a coaching capacity.
Khedira is a football legend and won 21 trophies in a long, successful playing career. In his time with Real between 2010 and 2015, he was part of a side that won 8 major trophies, including the 2013/14 Champions League, in the season after Mourinho departed.
Mourinho is looking for a coach to link between the club, the squad and the coaching staff, whom he has worked alongside in the past, and has knowledge of Spanish football. Sami Khedira fits this description perfectly, and will be a clever appointment.
The Portuguese manager has stayed loyal to staff in the past, including in his stint at Manchester United, but adding extra specialised help alongside should help Mourinho turn his appointment into success. Real Madrid failed to win La Liga in 2025/26, and haven’t won the UEFA Champions League since 2024.
Khedira hasn’t coached since his retirement from playing football in 2021, but the 39-year-old is clearly well thought of by Jose Mourinho, one of the brightest footballing brains.
If Mourinho wants to be a success at Real Madrid, where he ultimately failed in his first stint, getting his hands on a Champions League trophy is a must. Khedira brings that know-how to the coaching staff, as they search to do so in the 2026/27 season.
