The New England Patriots have had some movement throughout the past few weeks as they were able to get the A.J. Brown deal done, amongst other things. One of the latest ordeals with the team has been the strange absence of second-round pick Gabe Jacas, who was not present during mandatory minicamp.
The last time that Jacas was present was during rookie minicamp, but he watched from the sidelines. According to Mike Vrabel, Jacas had a procedure, hasn't signed his contract yet, and isn't with the team currently.
Jacas did have a hamstring injury during the combine that forced him to sit out, but he was healthy during his pro day, which led him to participate. ESPN's Mike Reiss was able to get more details about Jacas and his physicals.
“Two sources from different NFL teams said their clubs gave Jacas a passing grade on his physical exam, although both noted a labral tear in his shoulder that could eventually require medical attention, and one noted a stress fracture in his foot that could potentially worsen over time,” Reiss wrote.

“But a source familiar with Jacas' recovery said he underwent a knee procedure that was described as a “clean-up.” It is not known whether something happened after Jacas' physical exam and subsequent recheck at the combine, or when the Patriots had him in for a predraft visit the week of April 20, and that information wasn't disclosed to the team,” Reiss continued.
There are thoughts that the Patriots are seeking a level of financial protection in Jacas' contract, which is why a deal hasn't been completed. He also hasn't been present since May because he wasn't given a standard “participation agreement” from the Patriots, according to a source.
The Patriots have big plans for Jacas, but the hope is that everything can get situated with his contract sooner rather than later.
