Jayden Daniels adjusting quickly to new-look Commanders offense

The [Washington Commanders](https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/washington-commanders) are entering a new era on offense, and quarterback Jayden Daniels is embracing the challenge of learning a new system under offensive coordinator David Blough.

After two seasons working in Kliff Kingsbury’s spread-based attack, Daniels is now leading an offense designed to be more balanced, versatile, and unpredictable.  Washington’s coaching staff wants an offense where the running game mirrors the passing game, creating opportunities through play-action, bootlegs, and multiple formations rather than relying heavily on shotgun formations and run-pass options.

The transition represents another important step in Daniels’ development as the franchise quarterback. Despite injuries limiting him during portions of the 2025 season, for his career Daniels still has thrown  for 4,830 yards and 33 touchdowns while adding 1,169 rushing yards, showcasing the dual-threat ability that made him one of the NFL’s most dynamic young quarterbacks.

Head coach Dan Quinn promoted Blough to offensive coordinator following the departure of Kingsbury, believing a fresh approach would better maximize the roster’s strengths. The new offense is expected to feature more motion, under-center concepts, and creative personnel groupings designed to make life easier for Daniels while creating explosive opportunities for playmakers such as Terry McLaurin, Chig Okonkwo, and newcomer Antonio Williams.

Daniels taking charge

Washington has built the offense around Daniels’ unique skill set. Former [Commanders](https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/washington-commanders) receiver Santana Moss recently praised Daniels’ improved physique and confidence during offseason workouts, while coaches have highlighted his growing command of the huddle and leadership abilities.

The Commanders believe the scheme change can help Daniels take another leap in 2026. The organization hopes the new offensive system will put the young quarterback in a position to maximize his talents and elevate Washington back into playoff contention.

If Daniels adapts as quickly as expected, Washington’s offense could become one of the NFL’s most intriguing units this season, with the former Heisman Trophy winner firmly in the center of the franchise’s future plans.
