Patriots rumors: Will Drake Maye pull a Tom Brady with contract? Mike Florio not so sure

With the New England Patriots having just gone through minicamp, the team is looking to make some major noise after a season removed from a Super Bowl appearance. A key trend that fans are waiting to see is the Patriots' connection between Drake Maye and new wide receiver A.J. Brown, but when it comes to the former, people have questions about his contract situation.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk would discuss the quarterbacks who could see their contracts altered, with Maye's window opened after the 2026 season, as he mentions. As Maye's predecessor, Tom Brady would be known for taking team-friendly deals to help the team. Florio says that the 23-year-old “may not be as charitable.”

“The player who finished second in the MVP voting to cap his second season also has his window open after the 2026 regular season. And the Patriots will be hoping that, like Tom Brady before him, Maye will be less inclined to break the bank and more inclined to ensure that there will be cap space to have a quality team around him,” Florio wrote.

“Brady, who entered the league as the 199th overall pick, had naturally lower expectations early in his career,” Florio continued. “Maye, the third overall pick who was denied the commensurate reward due to the rookie wage scale, may not be as charitable as Brady was.”

Patriots' Drake Maye looks to excel in his third year

As mentioned, Maye is coming off a career-best season in his second year in the NFL, second in Most Valuable Player (MVP) voting as he threw for 4,394 yards to go along with 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

However, some want to see further improvement from the University of North Carolina product after an up-and-down playoff run, ending in an underwhelming outing in the Super Bowl. It all starts in Week 1 of the upcoming season as Maye and the Patriots will have a Super Bowl rematch against the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday, Sept. 9.
