STEELERS GET IN WORLD CUP SPIRIT
The World Cup began on Thursday, and the Steelers got into the World Cup spirit with players answering which of their teammates would be best at certain positions on the soccer pitch via the official Twitter account.
After Team USA’s 4-1 win over Paraguay on Friday night, World Cup fever is running rampant throughout the states, but there’s been plenty of other fun matches. With games taking place all over North America, the next few weeks should be spirited with fans traveling from all over.
PATRIOTS’ CONTRACT DISPUTE
The Steelers’ Week 2 opponent, the New England Patriots, are in the midst of a contract dispute with their second-round draft pick, Gabe Jacas. Per ESPN’s Mike Reiss, Jacas hasn’t been with the team since May as the Patriots haven’t put a participation agreement in his contract. That would ensure he would still get a contract relative to the slot he was drafted if he were to suffer an injury prior to signing.
Jacas had a clean-up knee surgery prior to the NFL Draft, which is why New England has been hesitant to give the participation agreement. But the longer Jacas remains unsigned and away from the team, the higher the likelihood that he might not be ready to contribute against the Steelers in Week 2.
New England would have to rely on Harold Landry II and Dre’Mont Jones as their primary EDGE rushers against Pittsburgh if Jacas isn’t ready to contribute.
NFL EYEING EXPANSION?
The NFL could be eyeing two more expansion teams, if UFL co-owner Mike Repole is to be believed. The BODYARMOR founder who bought into the UFL last year told reporters on Friday that the NFL is looking to add two more expansion teams, per Pro Football Talk.
Repole is connected in the sports world, as he’s the owner of Repole Stables and is a major donor for St. John’s athletics in addition to his role as UFL co-owner. While there’s no real timeline for expansion, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all if the NFL looked to add more teams within the next decade.
