$12 million free agent signing named Eagles' best breakout candidate

The Philadelphia Eagles already boasted one of the most talented rosters in the NFC, so there wasn't a need to go big in free agency.

However, that's not to say the team didn't get better. Edge rusher Jonathan Greenard was added via trade, and wide receivers Dontayvion Wicks and Hollywood Brown were added to the offense.

There's one move, though, that could sneakily be among the best moves of the offseason.

Eagles' Riq Woolen signing could pay dividends

Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports recently predicted one breakout player for each NFC team. For the Eagles, Pereles chose newcomer Woolen.

Woolen was added on a one-year, $12 million deal after helping the Seattle Seahawks win the Super Bowl. It's a low-risk investment for the Eagles after Woolen had a fine 2025 season. Regarding his breakout potential, Pereles offered the following:

One of my favorite signings of the offseason, the Eagles nabbed Riq Woolen on a one-year, $12 million deal. An impressive size/speed combination, Woolen recorded six interceptions as a rookie. He has just six since and has dealt with some inconsistencies. But the talent has never been a question. The floor in Philadelphia is that he makes too many poor plays to justify his being on the field, and the Eagles' CB2 problem remains unsolved. The median outcome is several good plays and some head-scratchers. But the ceiling? The ceiling is that the Eagles have the best cornerback trio in the NFL, and Woolen is a Pro Bowler again. He could flourish in his new home.

As Pereles mentioned, there's a wide range of outcomes for the Eagles with Woolen, but the ceiling is very high. The Eagles already have Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, so it's not like Woolen will be out on an island.

In 2025, Woolen played in 16 games and collected 41 tackles, 12 pass breakups, and one interception. Pro Football Focus credited Woolen with eight pass breakups, which ranked 32nd out of 217 qualified cornerbacks.

Since coming into the league in 2022, Woolen has been a reliable cover man. The UTSA product actually led the league in interceptions as a rookie and earned his first-and-only Pro Bowl selection.

It's hard to imagine a better landing spot for Woolen this offseason. Playing with Mitchell and DeJean significantly reduces his pressure and, as Pereles mentioned, this could end up being the best cornerback trio in the league.
