Not Fernandes: Romano drops seismic Man Utd bombshell confirming ‘active’ contact with £70m PL star

Manchester United are in ‘active’ contact with Lewis Hall’s representatives ahead of a potential summer pursuit, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Red Devils are simultaneously working on deals for their midfield rebuild along with a young but proven full-back addition.

United set sights on Lewis Hall swoop

Alas, they’ve landed on Hall as an ideal candidate who fits the bill.

The 21-year-old has established himself as one of the most promising left-backs in the Premier League in recent years, particularly since he swapped Chelsea, where he was a graduate of their academy, for boyhood club Newcastle United in 2024.

Hall had originally spent a season on loan at St. James’ Park in 2023/2024 before the Magpies opted to make his transfer permanent upon the culmination of his temporary contract.

Newcastle shelled out an upfront fee of £28 million while pledging an additional £7m in add-ons, adding the youngster to their ranks on a five-year deal.

How has Hall fared in recent years?

He has since, when fit, played an integral role at the heart of Eddie Howe’s team, racking up 75 Premier League appearances for the Tyneside outfit, as well as 11 Champions League appearances.

Unfortunately for Hall, his best efforts across 2025/2026 were deemed not enough to earn him a place in England’s World Cup squad.

Newcastle’s 12th-placed finish confirmed that they would not be playing any form of European football next campaign, which is said to be an area of concern for the defender.

Although Howe and the Newcastle board have outlined that Hall is off-limits this summer, it has been claimed that a bid in the region of £70m would be enough to force a sale.

Chelsea’s inclusion of a sell-on clause means they also stand to benefit from the transaction.

What has Romano said about United and Hall?

Speaking on YouTube yesterday, Romano said of the situation: “Over the last two, three days, Man United kept the contacts alive and active with those close to Lewis Hall, the left back from Newcastle. Manchester United already made contact a few weeks ago.

“Manchester United have genuine interest in the player. They really like Lewis Hall, so he’s one of the targets.”

“After Ederson, one more midfielder – at least, it could be two, we will see – but one more midfielder will join Manchester United,” the Italian continued.

“Then, left back remains a position they want to cover. Lewis Hall is a player they really, really love at Manchester United.”
