Dan Burn’s blunt admission - possible reason why Newcastle United star picked over Harry Maguire

Dan Burn has been involved in every England squad since Thomas Tuchel's appointment as manager.

Dan Burn is prepared to play whatever role necessary to help England end their 60-year wait for domestic silverware.

Newcastle United’s veteran defender has been involved in every Three Lions squad under Thomas Tuchel. Burn has nine England caps - a pipe dream just 18 months ago.

The 6ft 7in centre-back previously told The Gazette that he had given up on his international ambitions before earning his maiden bow at 32. Fast forward to the present and Burn is in North America as England bid to add a second star to their shirt.

Dan Burn makes admission

Burn faces stiff competition in the Three Lions squad and has accepted that he may not play a single minute at the tournament. Many high-profile media figures believe Manchester United defender Harry Maguire should have been selected instead - but Tuchel is keen to keep squad harmony high.

"Personally, for me, I just want to be here and help the team however possible that is,” he told a media huddle. “Whether I start, whether I come on, whether I don't play a minute, I'll not feel I have contributed any less than anyone else.

"I think that's important. I feel like this is the type of tournament where we have players who are the stars for their clubs normally, and they're going to have to take a little bit of a different role. That's leaning into that brotherhood thing again, where we are just happy for each other and happy to help out as much as we can."

Dan Burn replicating Argentina

The Blyth native also name-checked Argentina’s togetherness as a mindset England must replicate. Four years ago, the current champions rallied around Lionel Messi as he led his country to an elusive World Cup crown.

"Obviously, it's hard for me to comment on what went on (at Euro 2024) when I wasn't here," Burn added. "But we've made a big thing about that since the very first camp we had together, about having this brotherhood and being together.

"I feel like a lot of the time, the team that end up winning tournaments like these are the teams who are close. If you look at Argentina at the last World Cup, you felt as if they were really fighting for each other.

“That's what we're wanting to do. I think it's hard sometimes, you don't see each other for a long time and you have quite superficial conversations. It's normally just like, 'hi, how are you?'. But it's about trying to get to know each other on a deeper level."
